Even the Best Fertility Diet Won’t Work If You’re This Stressed
The Least Romantic Valentine’s Day of My Life (And Why The Atmosphere Matters Just As Much As What’s On The Menu)
My husband and I just celebrated our sixteenth Valentine’s Day together. And while I’ll never say no to a handwritten card, we’ve long sworn off eating out for the occasion.
Back in 2013, my husband took me to a small Italian restaurant in Astoria for Valentine’s Day. We had just moved to New York after college and were broke, but he thought this place would be worth the splurge.
Instead of romantic candlelit magic, we got an overpriced prix fixe menu and front-row seats to the head waiter screaming at the kitchen staff in the back of the tiny restaurant.
Every table went quiet.
You could feel the tension floating in the air between the bread baskets and half-filled wine glasses. No one knew where to look. The food came out fine, but the entire experience felt stressful and uncomfortable.
And at that point, it didn’t matter what was on the plate. The atmosphere changed everything.
What This Has to Do With Fertility Nutrition and Trying to Conceive
I see this same thing happen all the time with women who are trying to conceive.
You can be eating salmon, leafy greens, colorful fruits and vegetables — all the best foods for fertility. You can be following a carefully researched fertility diet and putting extra care into what to eat when trying to conceive.
But if you’re:
Rushing through lunch at your desk
Scarfing down food in the car between appointments
Eating while anxiously Googling trying to conceive tips
Constantly stressed about ovulation, timing, or your next appointment
…your body isn’t going to get the full benefit of those healthy foods.
When it comes to nutrition for fertility, it’s not just what you’re eating. It’s also the environment you’re in and the state of your nervous system.
This is all part of what we do inside my 3-month fertility nutrition program, Fueling Your Fertility so you have the tools for what and how to eat to optimize your chances of getting pregnant.
Does Stress Affect Fertility? Here’s What’s Happening in Your Body
One question I often hear as a Fertility Nutrition & Wellness Coach is: Does stress really affect fertility?
The short answer: definitely!
Stress directly impacts digestion, nutrient absorption, and hormone signaling. And all three matter deeply for fertility health.
When you’re stuck in a chronic fight-or-flight state, your body prioritizes survival over reproduction. Your body pumps out cortisol and blood flow is directed to your outer limbs to escape the stressful event instead of to your reproductive organs and digestive system (useful if you’re running from a bear, not so much when you’re having a stressful day at work). This diverted blood flow impairs digestion, nutrient absorption, and more.
And when you’re trying to conceive — whether you’re hoping to get pregnant naturally or preparing for fertility treatment — proper digestion and nutrient absorption are foundational.
It’s difficult to improve egg quality or balance hormones effectively with a stressed-out nervous system.
Your Nervous System and Fertility: Why Feeling “Safe” Matters
Your nervous system and fertility are deeply connected. When your body perceives safety, it can:
Digest food efficiently
Absorb nutrients properly
Regulate blood sugar
Support balanced hormone production
When your body perceives anything that poses a threat to your safety and well-being, it pulls resources away from those processes.
This is why fertility nutrition isn’t just about adding more leafy greens or supplements. It’s also about creating an internal environment that supports conception and a healthy pregnancy.
What you eat matters, but so does how you eat.
A Simple Practice to Support Digestion, Hormone Balance, and Fertility
The key is to find little moments throughout the day to slow down.
Try this:
Before you sit down to eat your next meal today, take three long, deep breaths.
Inhale until your lungs are full…
Hold your breath at the top…
And then slowly exhale longer than the inhale.
Do that three times before your first bite.
It’s so simple it almost seems silly, but it really makes a difference (even if you’re sitting at a restaurant with people screaming in the back, killing the vibe).
Deep, intentional breathing helps regulate your nervous system, moving you out of fight-or-flight and into a state that supports digestion, nutrient absorption, and hormone balance, so you’re in a better place to conceive and maintain a healthy pregnancy.
How You’re Feeling Matters Just As Much As What’s On Your Plate
That ridiculous experience is why we don’t do big Valentine’s dinners out anymore. Instead, my husband cooks dinner for me at home because I care a lot more now about how the day feels than how it looks on paper.
The same goes for your meals when you’re trying to conceive.
A perfectly curated plate doesn’t do much for your fertility if you’re stressed, distracted, and running on fumes while you eat it. A simple meal you actually sit down and enjoy? That’s life-giving!
A calm nervous system supports:
Better digestion
Better nutrient absorption
Better signals to your body that it’s safe.
And when you’re trying to conceive, “safe” is the message your body needs to hear.
